[Saba Sports News] The New Orleans Pelicans celebrated a dominant 129-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on New Year’s Eve, outplaying them throughout the game. Despite LeBron James’ 34-point effort, he found himself repeatedly challenged by Pelicans’ guard Jose Alvarado’s crafty defense.
Alvarado, renowned for his stealthy behind-the-back steals, successfully executed his signature move against James twice, contributing to James’ four turnovers that night, as highlighted by SportsCenter.
Following the game, the Pelicans continued to revel in their victory, with Larry Nance Jr. joining in the fun. He posted a comical photoshopped image on social media, featuring Alvarado’s face on the cover of the 2014 video game “Thief,” humorously summarizing Alvarado’s defensive prowess during the match.
The Pelicans’ win was not just about Alvarado’s defensive skills. They also saw strong performances from Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson, each scoring 26 points, and CJ McCollum adding 22 points. Nance Jr. himself contributed significantly with a double-double off the bench.
In contrast, the Lakers struggled despite contributions from Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves, who each scored 20 points. However, their efforts weren’t enough to compete with the Pelicans’ overall team performance.
The Pelicans ended 2023 on a high and are set to face the Brooklyn Nets next, hoping to maintain their momentum during their ongoing five-game homestand.
