[Saba Sports News] Russell Westbrook and the Los Angeles Clippers seem to be headed for a split, but the veteran point guard may have a chance to chase a championship with another Western Conference contender.
Westbrook exercised his $4 million player option for 2024-25, but the Clippers reportedly plan to part ways with him. L.A. is exploring trade options but may waive him if no deals are found. If available, the Denver Nuggets are seen as the favorites to sign him.
According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, there is “strong mutual interest” between Westbrook and the Nuggets. Sources also indicate that Nikola Jokic is a fan of Westbrook and is open to playing with him next season.
The Nuggets need a veteran guard after trading Reggie Jackson to the Charlotte Hornets and losing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency. While Westbrook’s offensive game has declined, he still excels at driving to the hoop and creating open shots for teammates. His defense improved last season, suggesting a willingness to play a more unselfish style as his career winds down.
Westbrook joined the Clippers midway through the 2022-23 season, making 21 starts and averaging 15.8 points per game. This past season, his role was reduced, and he averaged 11.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 68 games.
Reports indicated that Westbrook was unhappy with his role in L.A., highlighting potential personality challenges. However, if he accepts a complementary role, the Nuggets could be an ideal fit for him at this stage of his career.
