[Saba Sports News] Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is taking a significant step forward by introducing the Women’s National Super League (WNSL), a landmark initiative for enhancing women’s cricket in Sri Lanka. This new league, comprising both 50-over and T20 competitions, aims to elevate the profile of women’s cricket domestically and provide a vital platform for emerging talents to shine and potentially progress to international cricket.
The inaugural 50-over competition is set to start on February 6, featuring teams from Colombo, Kandy, Dambulla, and Galle. These matches, scheduled in Colombo, will see 60 players participating. According to SLC, this tournament represents a considerable advancement for women’s cricket, offering the players a chance to compete in a premier domestic event and paving their way to national recognition.
Following the 50-over tournament, which concludes with a final on February 12, the T20 league will commence on February 15, with its final slated for February 20. The competition format will see each team playing against every other team once, leading to a final showdown between the top two teams.
The initiation of the WNSL is a testament to SLC’s dedication to fostering gender equality within cricket, aiming to bolster the development of female cricketers and maintain a continuous flow of talent to the national team. This effort is particularly poignant considering the national team’s inactivity from March 2020 to November 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which stymied their development. With the launch of the WNSL, SLC seeks to quickly bridge this gap and rejuvenate the talent pipeline for the national team.
