[Saba Sports News] The BBC has recently unveiled the shortlist for the
2023 World Sports Star Awards’ Sports Personality of the Year. The nominees
include F1 driver Max Verstappen, tennis player Novak Djokovic, rugby star Siya
Kolisi, gymnast Simone Biles, and footballers Erling Haaland and Aitana
Bonmati. This prestigious award is determined by public voting and holds great
significance in the world of sports. The voting deadline is set for December
12. In the 2023 F1 Championship, which comprised 23 races, Verstappen emerged
victorious in 19 of them and reached the podium a total of 21 times. With a
winning rate of nearly 83%, he achieved the highest single-season winning rate
ever recorded by an F1 driver. Throughout the season, Verstappen led an
impressive 1,003 laps, becoming the first driver in history to accomplish this
feat. Even in the final Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where the Red Bull RB19 car had
received minimal upgrades in the latter half of the season, Verstappen managed
to cross the finish line with a remarkable 17-second lead. It wouldn’t be an
overstatement to suggest that if Red Bull were to compete in the 2024 season
using the RB19 car, they would still possess a speed advantage.
