[Saba Sports News] Memphis Grizzlies guard Marcus Smart’s relentless playing style has once again led to an injury. Smart disclosed to reporters after a recent shootaround that he sustained an unusual injury to his left hand. He explained that during a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on December 26, he dived for a loose ball and ended up with splinters in his hand from sliding into the floor. Smart, the former Defensive Player of the Year, mentioned that the injury is causing a sore spot in his hand, affecting his grip on the ball.
Smart, as reported by Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal, said, “When I dove, my hand slid into the court and the court just took everything with it. Last night, [the sore] kept getting re-opened. Every time the ball hit it, it just busted open with blood.”
He also described difficulties in handling the ball due to the injury, noting that any protective covering like a Band-Aid he tried wouldn’t stay put and the wound kept reopening. Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian, another journalist present after the shootaround, noted that Smart showed the injury to reporters, describing the wound as the size of a ping-pong ball and quite severe.
