[Saba Sports News] The Miami Heat have announced their decision to honor Udonis Haslem by retiring his No. 40 jersey next month. The ceremony is set to take place at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, during the halftime break of the Heat’s game against the Atlanta Hawks on January 19.
Haslem, who concluded his 20-year career with the Heat at the end of the 2022-23 season, played a pivotal role in the franchise’s history. He contributed significantly to the team’s three championship victories — in 2006, and consecutively in 2012 and 2013. Notably, Haslem is recognized as the Heat’s all-time leading rebounder, having amassed a total of 5,791 rebounds.
Renowned for epitomizing the “Heat Culture,” a concept strongly promoted by Heat president Pat Riley, Haslem has been a symbol of leadership and excellence within the team. Reflecting on the decision to retire Haslem’s jersey, Riley expressed that it represents a gesture of gratitude and acknowledgment of Haslem’s remarkable legacy and leadership over two decades, eagerly anticipating the moment Haslem’s jersey joins the ranks of other retired jerseys in the rafters.
Haslem’s jersey will be the sixth to be retired by the Miami Heat, placing him alongside other team legends like Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade. While Haslem’s career averages of 7.5 points and 6.6 rebounds may seem modest, his significant impact on the Heat organization and its fanbase makes this honor a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy with the team.
